Rochester, MN (KROC AM News) - A formal vote is still a few weeks away but it appears a proposed major upgrade of the Rochester north police station will be included in the city’s new capital improvement plan.

The City Council was briefed on the project Monday and several members raised questions about the estimated $18-million cost. City Administrator Steve Rymer told the council those concerns will be addressed during the final design work. Police Chief Jim Franklin told the council there is “a high priority” for the extra space the project would provide as the department is “busting at the seams.”

The council is also likely to include funding in the new CIP for the city’s new development assistance office. At the same time, staff will begin developing strategies to deal with space needs facing the library and a long list of Parks and Recreations projects. Also in the mix will be making plans for a new fire station.

The Council was also briefed on a possible new policy dealing with regulating short-term rentals in the city. Staff is considering a low-key approach that may include fees to cover inspection and administrative costs. The council is expected to revisit the issue at a future meeting.
