It's been serving customers in Minnesota for over 7 decades, but this classic business says it's now closing for good.

What were you doing 72 years ago? In 1953, Dwight D. Eisenhower had just been inaugurated as President of the United States. Here in the Land of 10,000 Lakes, C. Elmer Anderson was serving as governor. The U.S. Census Bureau states that Minnesota's population was just under 3 million people (it's almost twice that today).

And also in 1953, a small bakery in Columbia Heights, Minnesota, opened its doors for the first time. But now, after more than 70 years of serving up sweet memories, this beloved bakery is preparing to close its doors for the last time.

That's the word from Heights Bakery, located on Central Avenue in Columbia Heights, north of Minneapolis.

The family-run bakery just posted an announcement on their Facebook page that said the business is getting ready to close its doors for good later this summer, saying that Friday, August 1st, 2025, will be their last day in business.

We understand that this may shock and sadden many of our fans, but we also know that we have been blessed with an incredibly supportive, caring customer base who will recognize the people behind the treats, and for that, and so much more, we enter these final weeks with immense gratitude.

The post went on to say that the bakery was first started by the grandfather of its current owners, Dave and Debbie, and that '4 generations of DeShaws and Dotys have been honored to fill this community with bread, rolls, donuts and JOY for 72 years.'

The reason the long-time business is closing, the post explained, is that Dave and Debbie are getting ready to retire, noting that owning a bakery is a 'particular type of physical challenge,' the post said.

It went on to say that its current owners have spent 'their entire working lives at the bakery, working overnights, dozing through family holidays, working through their own birthdays, and missing important parts of life,' it noted.

Heights Bakery closing joins a list of other longtime businesses in Minnesota that have also recently announced their permanent closings. Palmer's Bar, which has been open in Minneapolis since 1906, said it's closing for good in September.

Meanwhile, Annie's Parlour, a restaurant which first opened in 1974 in the Dinkytown neighborhood near the University of Minnesota, closed permanently earlier this month. And, just this week, the news broke that Cafe and Bar Lurcat in Minneapolis will be closing for good in September, as well.
