Popular Theater Chain Just Abruptly Left Minnesota For Good
The business closings continue here in the Land of 10,000 Lakes, with one national theater chain having just permanently closed *all* of its locations here in our fair state.
Movie lovers have been reeling this week after news broke that a major national theater chain had suddenly closed all of its Minnesota locations. The abrupt shutdown has now left multiple screens dark and marquees blank, and caught many off guard.
Why So Many Movie Theaters Are Closing in 2025
However, the fact that movie theaters are closing permanently in 2025 probably shouldn't be a surprise. As home streaming and on-demand viewing, and binge-watching become more and more popular, the movie theater business has seen its share of challenges.

But there are still a lot of movie theaters in business here in Minnesota. In fact, according to Poidata, there are 197 movie theaters currently operating in the Bold North. Well, there are fewer now with news that this chain has shuttered all its theaters in the North Star State.
CMX Cinemas Closes Rochester and Burnsville Theaters
That was the word this week from Cinimex Holdings USA, which owns the CMX Cinemas chain of movie theaters. It was just a few weeks ago that USA Today reported that the company had filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection and noted that the firm said it would be looking to restructure its business operations.
Before this latest news, CMX Cinemas says that it operates 28 different locations across eight U.S. states and features over 300 different movie screens. Two of those locations happen to be here in the Land of 10,000 Lakes: The CMX Chateau 14 in Rochester and the CMX Odyssey IMAX in Burnsville.

And now they're both closed. It's a bit strange, given that a CMX statement from PR Newswire previously said the filing *would not* result in closings:
'CMX continues to welcome customers to its cinemas as usual, and this will not change during the latest proceedings,' the release said. 'CMX expects employees will continue to receive their usual wages and benefits without interruption,' the release noted.
Will CMX Ever Reopen in Minnesota?
But according to THIS story, the Rochester CMX location closed permanently on Sunday, July 27th. And BringMeTheNews reported that the Burnsville CMX location also closed for good the same day, though it quoted a CMX email that said the closings wouldn't *necessarily* be permanent, with the company saying, '...this isn't goodbye.'
Will CMX open new theaters in different locations here in Minnesota? We'll have to wait and find out. In addition to its locations in Rochester and Burnsville, CMX Cinemas also operates screens in Alabama, Florida, Georgia, Illinois, North Carolina, Ohio, and Virginia.
And while they may seem to be more prevalent recently, business closings here in Minnesota and around the country aren't a new phenomenon. Keep scrolling to check out 50 beloved retail chains that also closed their doors and aren't around anymore.
