Coldest Weather Of The Winter Now Taking Aim At Minnesota
Brace yourselves, Old Man Winter is about to crank up the chill to "Arctic blast" level, and it's coming soon for your nose and toes. But just how cold is the coldest it's ever been in Minnesota?
While we haven't had much snow so far this winter in the Land of 10,000 Now-Frozen Lakes, we have had several bouts with some sub-zero weather. But now, the coldest weather of the winter is taking aim at the North Star State. And yeah, it's going to be a cold few days.
Paul Douglas is a well-known name in Minnesota when it comes to forecasting the weather. He's currently a meteorologist based in the Twin Cities and has been the chief meteorologist for various broadcast outlets throughout his career. And he's sounding the alarm about our incoming Arctic blast, which is set to hit the Bold North starting on Saturday, January 18th and continue through early next week.

In a post on his X (formerly Twitter) page, Douglas noted that this weekend, there will be 'nothing between Minnesota and the North Pole but a barbed wire fence.' He also posted three frigid headlines about our incoming cold weather:
- 60-70 consecutive hours below zero
- Windchills -25 to -35 degrees Sunday through Monday
- Significant risk of frostbite, hypothermia
The National Weather Service in the Twin Cities says after mild weather Thursday and Friday, with high temperatures forecast in the upper 30s, colder air will filter into Minnesota on Saturday:
Winds will remain elevated and gusty heading into Monday. Combined with lows in the teens and possibly low 20s below zero, wind chills Saturday and Sunday nights are expected to drop into the 25 below to 40 below range. Cold Weather Advisories are a slam dunk but any lower could also bring on Extreme Cold Watch/Warning headlines.
And after high temperatures that aren't expected to make it above zero on Sunday and Monday, milder weather is expected to return to Minnesota on Tuesday. And while that's cold, it's not even close to the coldest weather ever recorded here in the Gopher Star State.
To tie Minnesota's All-Time Record Low, the mercury would have to dip all the way down to 60 degrees BELOW ZERO. That's right, the coldest temperature ever recorded in the Land of 10,000 (Really Frozen) Lakes was -60 F, which happened up in Tower, Minnesota back on February 2, 1996.

According to the Minnesota DNR, the air mass that produced the record low at Tower nearly 30 years ago also produced bitterly cold temperatures across the rest of Minnesota. "The Twin Cities (at MSP airport) recorded -32 F, and has not recorded a temperature of -30 or colder since that time. International Falls bottomed out at -45 F," it noted.
