COVID-19: Will The State Help Mayo Deal With A Financial Storm?

St Paul (Learfiled News Service) - Key lawmakers are working on a state assistance package for Mayo Clinic and hope initial measures can be passed when the Minnesota Legislature reconvenes in Saint Paul Tuesday.

Last Friday Mayo announced pay cuts for 20,000 workers and an unknown number of furloughs as it deals with the effects of COVID-19. Mayo said it is projecting a $3-billion loss by the end of the year.

State Senator Carla Nelson of Rochester says:
"Everyone realizes the critical nature that Mayo Clinic is playing right now specifically, but also in general, to our state's economy and well-being, and of course the health and wellness of patients."
Nelson won't give specifics but says there are "very feasible things that the state can do immediately" to assist Mayo Clinic. She says if anyone is going to get us out of the COVID crisis, it will be Mayo.
