Why Curt St. John Is Passionate About Volunteering for This Veterans Program
Supporting veterans is deeply personal to me. My father enlisted in the Army during the Vietnam War, served two years overseas, and later dedicated more than 30 years to our hometown as a police officer in Wisconsin.
Today, veterans in our communities span generations, from young adults to senior citizens, and their needs are just as diverse. DAV of Minnesota works to meet those needs through a range of programs, including a vital transportation service that helps veterans reach medical appointments at regional VA medical centers, community-based VA clinics, and VA-referred community clinics. For many veterans, reliable transportation can be a significant barrier to care. DAV’s transportation program, which dates back to the post–World War II era, has been addressing that challenge for decades — and in 2025, the organization proudly celebrated its 100th anniversary.
The scope of this effort is impressive. With 40 vehicles stationed in more than 20 communities across Minnesota — including several counties without their own transportation programs — DAV provides free rides Monday through Friday on a first-come, first-served basis. In 2025 alone, 140 volunteer drivers transported 21,410 veterans to their appointments.
The organization is always seeking additional volunteer drivers, and I’m proud to say I’ve added my name to the list. If you are 21 or older, hold a valid driver’s license, can meet insurance requirements, and have time available during the week, this is a meaningful way to give back. I still need to complete the necessary paperwork and physical, but I’m truly looking forward to serving those who have served our country.
If you’re interested in getting involved, I encourage you to visit the transportation volunteer page, learn more about the veterans transportation program online, or call (651) 291-1212 for more information.
