Independence, MN (MinnesotaNow) - A St. Paul teenager has entered a guilty plea in a deadly distracted driving case involving the death of a young child.

Nineteen-year-old Connor Iversen was charged last August with criminal vehicular homicide. He was accused of speeding through a stop sign and crashing into an SUV, resulting in the death of 11-year-old Lilyana Loyocano of Mound.

Ran Stop Sign at More Than 60 MPH

According to the criminal complaint, the deadly collision occurred in the town of Independence. Witnesses told investigators that Iversen did not slow down as he approached the intersection, and a State Patrol crash reconstruction determined his vehicle was traveling at 63 mph one second before the crash.

Phone Records Examined by Investigators

The court document says search warrants were executed for Iversen's phone records, which showed he was using his cell phone in the moments leading up to the fatal collision.

The young victim was one of six occupants of the SUV. She was transported to a nearby hospital following the crash, where she died from her injuries.

Guilty Plea Entered 

Iversen who entered a guilty plea to the criminal vehicular homicide charge today, is scheduled to be sentenced next month.  In exchange, Hennepin County prosecutors dismissed three other criminal cases against Iversen the charged him with third-degree assault, fleeing police, and receiving stolen property.
