Important Reminder Regarding Seasonal Road, Trail Closures In Minnesota
Spring weather throughout Minnesota so far in 2026 has been characterized by "weather whiplash," featuring a mix of warm, spring-like days followed by significant, late-season winter storms.
However, while snow and freezing temperatures can still be in play in parts of the state, conditions will be warming up significantly in the days ahead, which has prompted a notice from the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources.
The important reminder is for outdoor enthusiasts who utilize the DNR-managed roads and motorized trails.
Check With The DNR Before Heading Out To Managed Roads and Motorized Trails
The Minnesota Department of Natural Resources recently reminded Minnesotans that it has begun temporarily closing some DNR-managed roads and motorized trails as seasonal melting makes them too soft to support vehicle traffic without causing damage.

How long the temporary closures in state forests, state parks, recreation areas, and wildlife management areas last depends on local weather and surface conditions, which can shift rapidly.
“These spring thaws create wet, unstable conditions. Closures protect our roads and trails from damage, avoid costly repairs, and keep people and equipment safe, too,” said Matt Huseby, DNR’s Forest Roads Program coordinator.
Huseby went on to say that anyone planning to visit any state-managed lands should check the DNR's road and trail closure webpage for updates and respect all closures. The road and trail closures are updated on Thursdays after 2 p.m.
It's important to note that roads that can handle vehicle traffic during the spring thaw will remain open, but might have vehicle weight restrictions. The DNR also posts signs at entry points and parking lots when temporary closures are in effect.
