Every year, National Selfie Day is celebrated on June 21. It's a day in which people all over the world snap a photo of themselves and post it on social media. Ok, it's not actually a requirement to post it, but if you don't share it... did it really happen? National Day Calendar encourages people to get creative and have fun with their selfies on this day and every day.

What Is a Selfie?

Selfies have been around for quite some time. Ever since cameras became handheld, people have been snapping photos of themselves enjoying life.

Merriam-Webster defines a selfie as "an image that includes oneself (often with another person or as part of a group) and is taken by oneself using a digital camera especially for posting on social networks."

Who Took the First Selfie?

The Library of Congress credits Robert Cornelius with taking the first selfie in 1839. Of course, it was not called a selfie, but rather a "self-portrait." Cornelius stood alone in his family's gas lighting business in Philadelphia and took his own photo.

Cameras were quite cumbersome and slow during the 19th century. The historical site estimates that he needed to stand motionless for 10 to 15 minutes while the camera processed his photo.

Since then, people have been taking their own portraits for nearly two centuries. This process has gotten much easier over the years, and these days it's almost synonymous with social media itself. Snapping a photo and sharing it online takes only a few seconds. Some sources estimate over 92 million selfies are taken every single day across the globe.
