Buggy Struck in Fillmore County Hit & Run, 2 Kids Among 6 Taken to Hospital

Spring Valley, MN (KROC-AM News)- Multiple people were taken to a hospital following a hit-and-run Amish buggy-vehicle collision in Fillmore County.

It happened Friday night. A news release issued by the Fillmore County Sheriff’s Office says nine people were in the buggy at the time of the collision. 

Deputies responded to multiple 911 calls at the scene shortly after 10 p.m. in the 29,000 block of County Rd. 1, which is in northern rural Spring Valley. 

First responders reported six of the buggy occupants suffered injuries significant enough to require further care at a hospital. The crash victims were taken to St. Mary’s Hospital in Rochester with unknown injuries. 

As of Saturday morning, a 12-year-old and one-year-old remained in the hospital in stable condition. Authorities said the driver of the striking vehicle fled the scene. 

Law enforcement later found the suspect driver and vehicle at a residence in Spring Valley. The names of the driver as well as the injured kids have not been released. 

The State Patrol is assisting the Fillmore County Sheriff’s Office with the crash investigation. Spring Valley Ambulance, Mayo Clinic Ambulance and the Spring Valley Fire Department also responded to the scene. 

Friday night’s buggy collision occurred south of the vehicle-buggy crash that claimed the lives of seven-year-old Wilma and 11-year-old Irma Miller last September. 

The driver in that case, 35-year-old Samantha Jo Peterson, and her twin sister Sarah, who is accused of switching places with Samantha at the scene to mask Samantha’s alleged impairment from law enforcement, have since been charged in that fatal crash.
