$55M Sports Facility Proposals Headed to Rochester City Council
Rochester, MN (KROC-AM News) - The Rochester City Council will receive a presentation next week concerning proposals to expand the existing Regional Sports Center at the Rochester Community and Technical College campus.
RCTC Regional Sports Center Discussions
The discussions stem from a decision to move forward with the development of the new Regional Sports Complex in southeast Rochester without an indoor facility. Elected officials and city staff have been studying the possibility of utilizing the existing athletic facilities at the RCTC campus, which were built with a combination of state funding and revenues from Rochester's half-cent sales tax following voter approval in referendums held in 1998 and 2012.
Presentation Lists 3 Options
City staff will present members of the City Council with three potential options that carry price tags of around $55 million. The first calls for an expansion of the existing field house, along with repairs and other work needed to retain the existing dome at the RCTC campus. It would also include a list of deferred maintenance projects involving the athletic facilities.
The second option would preserve the existing dome with a multipurpose expansion adjacent to it, while the third option involves the construction of a new and larger year-round dome that could include a multiuse rectangular field, multipurpose courts, pickleball courts, and other recreational spaces.
$55 Million million Cost Estimates
The materials included with the Rochester City Council agenda for its meeting next Monday do not identify funding sources for the proposed projects.

Regional Sports Complex
Funding for the new Regional Sports Complex under construction near the Shoppes on Maine retail center is coming from the extension of the city sales tax that was approved by voters in 2023. Bills introduced in the state legislature by Democratic lawmakers representing Rochester seek to revoke that funding.

Legislation Would Strip Funding For Outdoor Regional Sports Complex
The Minnesota House Taxes Committee held a hearing earlier this week on the legislation, which is being considered for inclusion in the House omnibus tax bill. Supporters claim voters were misled when they approved the sales tax funding because the final plans for the project did not include an indoor recreation facility.
