Pierpoint, SD (KROC-AM News)- A man from Rochester was killed after being struck by a semi truck in South Dakota.

The South Dakota Highway Patrol indicates the fatal incident happened after a vehicle-deer collision.

First responders were called to the deadly incident shortly before 10:45 Wednesday night.

Semi Strikes and Kills Rochester Man at Scene of Vehicle-Deer Collision Along Rural South Dakota Road

A preliminary investigation indicates the Rochester man and a 53-year-old South Dakota man were riding in a vehicle that had struck a deer seven miles west of the small town of Pierpont, which is about 40 miles east of Aberdeen.

The two men returned to the scene in a second vehicle and parked it facing east in the westbound lane, got out of the vehicle and left its lights on, authorities said. 

A westbound semi approached the area after the men exited the second vehicle. The truck driver tried to swerve to avoid a collision but struck the Rochester man, according to the South Dakota Highway Patrol. 

He was pronounced dead at the scene. His name has not been released. 

Truck Driver and Other Pedestrian Not Hurt

The driver of the truck, described by the South Dakota Highway Patrol as a 21-year-old South Dakota man, and the other pedestrian were not hurt. 

The South Dakota Highway Patrol tells Watertown Radio that the deadly crash is under investigation.
