Just when you thought it was safe to spray a little air freshener and make your house smell amazing, it's not.  A new recall was just issued by Consumer Product Safety Commission for air fresheners sold in Minnesota, Iowa, Illinois, Wisconsin, and throughout the United States due to a part that is missing.  Unfortunately, this missing part has led to corrosion and cans rupturing which could lead to an injury.

About 67,000 Air Fresheners Recalled in Minnesota, Iowa, Illinois, Wisconsin, and Throughout the U.S. Due to Product Rupturing and Potential Injury

According to the CPSC.gov website, two different types of AirWick air fresheners have been recalled due to the product possibly leaking or rupturing.  Several reports have been made by consumers indicating issues with the product.

Details of the Air Fresheners That Are Part Of The AirWick Recall

Below are details from the CPSC.gov website regarding the AirWick products that have been recalled:

  • Description: AirWick Fresh New Day® aerosol air fresheners - “Fresh Linen” and “Fresh Waters” scents
    • Fresh Linen - 8-ounce aerosol cans with UPC 0-62338-74734-7
    • Fresh Waters - UPC 0 -62338-77002-4

  • Batch And Date Codes: These are printed on the bottom of the can.  UPC is printed on the rear label next to the barcode.

  • Reason for Recall: A single batch of the aerosol air fresheners is missing a corrosion inhibitor, which can lead to corrosion and rupture of the metal can and expulsion of the contents, posing injury and laceration hazards. In addition, corrosion of the container can result in leakage, posing a risk of skin and eye irritation upon contact.
  • Where The Product Was Sold: Between March 2022 and September 2022, you could purchase this product for about $1.25 at grocery stores, hardware and home improvement stores, drug stores, Doller Tree, True Value, and other mass merchandisers.

What To Do If You Have Purchased The Product That Has Been Recalled in Minnesota

If you have purchased the products that are part of the recall, you are asked to immediately stop using the air fresheners and to take the following steps:

  • wrap the product in several layers of paper
  • dispose of the product in accordance with state and local requirements

You are also eligible for a free replacement and Reckitt is offering a voucher.  Before you dispose of the product, take a photo of the recalled can.  Send photo along with contact information and confirmation that the product will be disposed of and provide this to Reckitt.  You can reach them the following ways:
