I had a freak out moment the other day.  Thank goodness I order my groceries online otherwise you would have seen me in the Walmart aisle near the eggs having a bit of a meltdown.

If you haven't bought a carton of eggs lately, get ready for a bit of sticker shock the next time you decide to make an omelet.

How Much Are Eggs Right Now in Minnesota?

On Saturday, a carton of 12 eggs from Walmart was $3.77.  These aren't anything fancy.  They aren't even cage-free.  But those chicken butt nuggets cost me $3.77!  I just looked today and the cheapest one I could find was still over $3.40 for 12 eggs.

I just tried to do an order pick-up at one of the Kwik Trip stores in Rochester, Minnesota and their eggs are even more expensive!  $3.99!

I checked out HyVee as well and if I ordered groceries on their website right now from the 37th Street store in Rochester, Minnesota, their Eggland's Best Large Eggs, 12 ct (the same that Walmart is selling) has had a price drop from $3.99 to $3.49.

Why Are Eggs So Expensive Right Now in Minnesota?

If eggs are a staple in your kitchen too, you are probably wondering why the price of eggs has skyrocketed.  According to agriculturedive.com, in August, the wholesale price for eggs went above $3 per dozen.  This is a price increase of 19% from the year before!

The cause for this latest spike in cost stems from another bird flu outbreak.

Approximately 18.7 million egg laying hens and pullets across seven states have died as a result of the avian virus since the start of the year, according to the USDA. Cal-Maine Foods, the largest U.S. egg producer, temporarily halted production at one of its Texas plants after detecting bird flu. - agriculturedive.com

YOU and I Are Also Part of the Reason Why Egg Prices Are High

Just like Taylor Swift sang, "It's me, hi, I'm the problem, it's me".  If you are buying eggs right now, it is also you.

According to Fooddive.com, consumer demand for eggs has risen as well.  When there is a short supply of eggs and more people wanting them, that is a simple supply and demand issue in economics which will cause the price to go up.
