Rochester, MN (KROC AM News) -  Riders of Rochester’s public buses no longer need to wear a mask.

For the first time in nearly 2 years.

Rochester Public Transit Tuesday announced:

“Due to a ruling by the U.S. District Court in Florida announced on Monday, the Center for Disease Control and Prevention’s January 29, 2021 order requiring masks on public transportation conveyances and at public transportation hubs is no longer in effect.”

RPT says it was also notified Monday that the TSA was no longer enforcing its mask-related security directives. RPT says “Without these federal orders in effect, RPT will now follow the official City of Rochester policy which does not require the wearing of masks in city owned facilities, including transit vehicles.”

RPT says it still welcomes “the use of masks on board buses for whoever wishes to wear them and encourages unvaccinated and immunocompromised individuals to consider wearing facial coverings.”

RPT spokesman Nick Lemmer says the mask mandate for the city's buses began with the city order that went into effect on July 8, 2020.
