The annual NorthShore Inline Marathon in Duluth is full of excitement and competition as competitors from far and wide skate their way toward Canal Park in one of the largest inline skating marathons in the country.

This year, the big day came with heartbreaking news as one of the event's participants passed away during Saturday's race.

Organizers for the NorthShore Inline Marathon shared in a social media post over the weekend that inline marathon participant Mike Lufholm had died after this year's event. Mike was 36 years old.

In the post, they shared that Mike had a big impact on the rollerblading community, sharing that it was his passion and that it "truly brought him so much happiness". Mike was originally from the Duluth area but had been calling the Twin Cities home most recently.

Marathon organizers went on to express their condolences to Mike's wife, daughter, other family members, and others who knew him.

A friend of Mike's wife set up a GoFundMe to help his wife Erin and their 3-month-old daughter Olivia in the wake of this tragic loss.

The GoFundMe post explains that besides being a passionate athlete, Mike was an avid photographer and nature lover with a zest for life and love for his family and friends.
