In a state where hotdish recipes spark debate and hockey loyalties run deep, there’s another rivalry quietly dividing Minnesota households. When it comes to pets, are we all about the purrs, or do wagging tails win out?
Are Minnesotans More Into Cats or Dogs?
It’s the age-old showdown with a Minnesota twist—is our state more into cats or dogs? Anytime someone asks if you're a cat person or a dog person, it feels like you have to pick a side. So what’s your vibe—team tail wags or team kitty cuddles?
I always have a tough time answering that question because I'm pretty much both a cat AND dog person. My wife and I share our house with three great cats (Huck, Hazel, and Hobbes) and three incredible dogs (Asher, Juniper, and Frances), so I really *am* in both the cat camp as well as being on team dog.

But what about the state of Minnesota overall? Is the Land of 10,000 Lakes a cat state or a dog state? That's the question a survey commissioned by Time2Play set out to answer once and for all.
New Survey Reveals Minnesota’s Favorite Pet
To find out, their survey asked 3,045 cat and dog owners across the U.S. and asked them if they own a cat or a dog, what state they come from, and how often they post about their pets on social media. And, as you might expect, the results were split exactly down the middle, with respondents in 25 states saying they preferred dogs and respondents in the other 25 states saying they preferred cats.

So what about here in the North Star State? Well, according to the survey by Time2Play, CATS are the most popular here in Minnesota! That makes sense, seeing as the Bold North has several feline-friendly places like the Cafe Meow and events like the recent Wedge Live Cat Tour. Plus, a certain, well-known Minnesota city was also just listed as one of the best cities in the country for single cat ladies.
The North Star State isn't alone in its affection for felines, however. Cats were also the preferred pet in other states, including Massachusetts, Nevada, Pennsylvania, and Michigan. Dogs, meanwhile, took the top spot in other states like California, New Jersey, Colorado, and Texas.
Behind the Cheddar Curtain, over in my home state of Wisconsin, dogs came out on top, while down in Iowa, cats also topped the survey. And cats were also more popular in both North Dakota and South Dakota, according to the survey.
Dog Owners Share More—Even in Cat-Loving States
Interestingly, though, dog people-- even in Minnesota, a 'cat' state-- were much more likely to share photos of their pets on social media, 56.8% compared to 43.2% for cat people.
