Over 4 Million Minnesotans Now Drive—But Can You Pass The Test?
MEA Weekend is a chance for students all over Minnesota to take their first break of the new school year, and it's also the time of year many Minnesotans will head out on one last vacation. But speaking of traveling-- and school-- do you think you have what it takes to ace our state's written driver’s test?
Minnesota Has Over 4 Million Licensed Drivers—Here’s What It Takes to Join Them
Minnesota is the Land of 10,000 Lakes, but we're also the Land of Over 4 Million Licensed Drivers. And, actually, it might be more than that right now. But according to Statista, Minnesota was home to 4,143,272 licensed drivers in 2021.
And all 4,143,272 of them had to first take a written test to get their permit to begin learning how to drive. Heck, when I moved to Minnesota from Wisconsin nearly 15 years ago, I had to take the written test-- and was more than a little nervous that I wouldn't pass!

According to the Minnesota Department of Public Safety Driver and Vehicle Services Division (DPS/DVS), there are six separate steps you should take to get your driver's license here in the North Star State:
- Study and prepare
- Make an appointment
- Take the written test
- Practice driving
- Take the road test
- Get your license

How Much It Costs to Get (and Keep) a Driver’s License in Minnesota
Of course, administering those tests, both written and on-the-road, costs money. So, currently, DPS/DVS says that right now, there is a $46 fee to get a Class D Minnesota driver's license. That's in addition to the Class D Instruction Permit cost of $29.50, which is then valid for two years.
And, in case you don't pass initially and have to retake the written test, that will cost you an extra $10 for any 'third and subsequent written tests, after failing the first two,' DPS/DVS says.
So, could you pass the test? Here in the Bold North, to pass the driver's permit written test, you need to answer at least 80 percent of the questions correctly. The test consists of 40 questions in total, so you need to answer 32 questions correctly to pass.
