French fries are one of the most popular foods in America these days, and a new national survey has just determined which restaurant sells our favorite fries here in Minnesota.

It's tough to find someone who doesn't like French fries, right? In a story I wrote earlier this summer, we found out that the Fresh French Fries booth at the Minnesota State Fair is one of the top-selling vendors and made over $1.5 million in 2024!

French fries have been around a while, too. This History.com story notes that while the name suggests they were invented in France, another story says that "17th-century Belgian peasants, who lived along the banks of the Meuse River, invented the dish when they 'cut potatoes into the shape of small fish when the river froze and they could no longer fish.'"

Rochester Restaurant Serves Minnesota’s Favorite Fast-Food Fries

These days, there is no shortage of places to get an order of piping hot fries. But just which French fries are our favorite here in the Land of 10,000 Lakes? That's the question the content team at High Risk Pay set out to answer. They surveyed over 2,500 Americans from all 50 states to determine which fast food fry is each state’s favorite.

And here's what they found: Overall, McDonald’s takes the crown and is home to America's Favorite French Fries. They had the highest average rating (7.3/10) in the survey, with a whopping 99.7 percent of Americans reporting they have tried McDonald’s fries.

Five Guys and Chick-fil-A take second and third place in the survey, both scoring an average rating of 6.7/10. Over 80 percent of Americans reported that they have tried these fries.

Arby’s (6.3/10) snagged fourth place, the survey said, which officially creates the Mount Rushmore of French Fries: McDonald’s, Five Guys, Chick-fil-A, and Arby’s.

But here in the North Star State, while McDonald's fries are great, they're not our favorite. According to the survey, Minnesota's favorite fast-food French fry can be found at Five Guys, which rated 7.2/10, the highest average fry rating in the state. Five Guys fries are also the favorite in Colorado, Idaho, Maine, New Hampshire, Tennessee, Vermont, and Wyoming.
