While there may be many things we can worry about here in Minnesota, being the victim of a homicide should be pretty low on the list, according to this new survey.

That's right, Minnesota has one of the lowest murder rates in the country. At least that's what this new survey from SafeWise says. In fact, the Land of 10,000 Lakes has the 5th lowest rate out of all 50 states. Only Hawaii, Vermont, Maine and New Hampshire have lower homicide rates than we do in Minnesota.

That's comforting, isn't it? The survey says, 'Minnesota boasts the 5th lowest murder rate compared to other states. This was 2.9 points the national average of 4.9 homicides per 100,000 individuals," it noted.

Which is definitely good news. And seems to fly in the face of those high-profile news stories about Minnesota murders and shootings that sometimes seem to dominate our news feeds. (Like the on-going murder retrial of Rochester's Alexander Weiss, whose first murder trial ended with a hung jury and mistrial back in May.)

The survey says while we tend to remember those stories, that's not representative of our relatively-low homicide rate in Minnesota and the rest of the top 5 states with the lowest rates. "Perceptions do not match these low rates with nearly 50% of individuals worrying about murder in their everyday lives," the survey noted. "Perhaps our nation’s obsession with true crime has led us towards excessive paranoia," it said.

So the next time you hear about another horrible shooting or murder here in Minnesota, remember, while it's still terrible, it IS the exception here-- and not the rule. You can read more about the SafeWise survey HERE.
