Minnesota Just Did Something For The Third Time Ever
To say this year is one for the history books might be a bit of an understatement, considering that Minnesota just did something for the third time ever.
Minnesota has been a state for nearly 165 years now, having been admitted to the union on May 11, 1858, so it's kind of amazing that this phenomenon has only happened twice before.
What is it? It's the amount of snow that has fallen in the Minneapolis/Saint Paul metro area this winter. According to various reports, the winter of 2023 is now the third snowiest EVER in the North Star State!

Paul Huttner is the chief meteorologist at MPR and posted the news on his Twitter page over the weekend. The Minneapolis-St. Paul International Airport (MSP) noted that 8-and-a-half inches of snow fell last Friday night into Saturday, giving the metro area a snowfall total of 89.7 inches, which officially puts this winter season into third place on the all-time snowiest winters list.
And, weather forecasters are now keeping their eye on yet ANOTHER late-season storm that could bring more snow to the Land of 10,000 Lakes Tuesday, though much of that snow is expected to fall mainly north and west of the Twin Cities metro.
Minnesota also did something for the FIRST time this year over the weekend, as well: The temperature hit the big 5-0 for the first time since last November at both MSP Airport in Bloomington and the Rochester International Airport (RST) on Sunday. That's a Minnesota weather milestone that usually happens in early March.
In fact, Huttner noted that our first 50-degree day this year was the latest in 22 years at MSP, and also tied 1950 and 1984 for the 12-latest occurrence in the calendar year in Rochester.
