The Minnesota Vikings were picked to head abroad and take on the New Orleans Saints in the NFL's 2022 International Series.

The Vikings and Saints are each coming off of disappointing 2021 seasons where both teams missed the playoffs. The Vikings will head to London for the third time since the International Series launched in 2007.

Minnesota Vikings To Play New Orleans Saints in Week 4

The NFL made the announcement Wednesday morning that the Vikings would take on the Saints at 8:30 a.m. Central Time on October 2nd at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium in London, U.K.

The Vikings and Saints have had their share of intense matchups throughout their history. The 2017 'Minneapolis Miracle" sent the Vikings to the NFC Championship game, and the 2009 NFC Championship Game in which the Saints won and eventually led to their first Super Bowl Championship.

Other 2022 International Series games include:

  • New York Giants vs. Green Bay Packers - October 9th - 8:30 a.m at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium in London, U.K.

  • Seattle Seahawks vs. Tampa Bay Buccaneers - November 13th - 8:30 a.m. at Allianz Arena -- home of FC Bayern Munich in Munich, Germany
  • Arizona Cardinals vs. San Francisco 49ers - Monday, November 21st - 7:15 p.m. Estadio Azteca in Mexico City

The Minnesota Vikings History in London

The Vikings have been to London twice before and have a 2-0 record.

The Vikings' first trip to London was in 2013 when they took down the Pittsburgh Steelers 34-27. Adrain Peterson and Greg Jennings each scored two touchdowns in what was the first win of the season for the Vikings. Matt Cassel was the starting QB, taking the place of an injured Christan Ponder. The Vikings finished the 2013 season 5-10-1.

Minnesota made the trip across the pond again in 2017 for a matchup with another AFC North team, the Cleveland Browns. The Vikings came in with a 5-2 record on the season, while the Browns were 0-7. Cleveland actually carried a lead late into the 3rd quarter, but the Vikings were able to get the offense going in the 4th quarter. Jerick McKinnon and Kyle Rudolph scored the final two touchdowns as the Vikings outscored the Browns 18-0 down the stretch for a 33-16 win.

The Vikings finished the 2017 season 13-3 and fell in the NFC Championship game to the Philidelphia Eagles (who ended up winning the Super Bowl).

So set your alarm, grab some coffee and enjoy some early-morning Vikings football on October 2nd when the Vikings take on the Saints.

LOOK: The story behind every NFL team name

Stacker delved into the story behind every NFL football team name. Overall team records, also included, are reflective of NFL regular-season games. There are some football teams with well-known nicknames—the Jets, for instance, are often referred to as Gang Green—but we also divulge how some teams’ official names are sparingly used (the Jets’ neighbors, the Giants, are actually known as the New York Football Giants). Sometimes a team name can tell you a lot about local history: The Vikings of Minnesota draw upon the area’s strong ties to Scandinavia, and the Tampa Bay Buccaneers are dripping in local legend related to Florida’s pirate past.

Let’s kick off the countdown with the folks who earned their nickname by buying boxes of used team jerseys.
