Why You Might Soon Be Able to Get a Vikings License Plate in Minnesota
If you're a fan of the Minnesota Vikings, you might soon be able to display your Purple Pride on your vehicle with a new vanity license plate in Minnesota.
There are very few places these days where some advertisement or logo doesn't already appear. And, if a proposal introduced in the Minnesota legislature is passed, you might soon be seeing the familiar Minnesota Vikings logo and colors right there on your vehicle's license plate.
That's because a new bill that would authorize those plates was introduced this week at the capital in St. Paul. The Star Tribune Sens. Julia Coleman and Karin Housley are sponsoring the bill in the Senate, while Reps. Erin Koegel and John Huot sponsored a companion bill in the Minnesota House.
MN's 'Whiskey' Plates Could Be Going Away
If approved, the program would be similar to the existing Minnesota critical habitat license plates program. Minnesotans could fork over an extra $30 a year when renewing their tabs to get the special Vikings license plate. That $30 would then be donated to the Minnesota Vikings Foundation, a nonprofit public charity organization the Star Tribune said focuses on youth health and education initiatives.
There are already 24 other states that have special NFL team license plates available, including over in Wisconsin, where special gold Green Bay Packer license plates help raise funds to maintain Lambeau Field.
Would YOU be interested in buying a Minnesota Vikings license plate? If so, research from the state of Minnesota said you'd be among about a million other Vikings fans who've expressed interest in the potential special plates. If the bill is approved during this session (which just started Monday and runs through mid-May) those new Vikings plates could be available later this year.
