Is he inviting you to his rally tomorrow at Mayo Civic Center in Rochester? No, but here's why you will get a message from the president on your phone, no matter who your cell carrier is.

That's right, you-- and anyone else with a cell phone capable of sending or receiving messages-- will indeed get a special message from the president later on Wednesday. It's all part of a new FEMA warning system that will let any president inform all citizens of an impending crisis or national emergency.

Yeah, this is a test of something we hope never has to be used. Something on the scale of 9/11 or equally horrible. You might be surprised to find out (I know I was) that the government can just grab hold of your phone and send you a message-- even if you haven't opted into such a program.

But, according to this CBS News story, that's the point of this new system. "'It should be reserved for true situations, true emergencies when we need to get the public's attention,' former Secretary of Homeland Security Jeh Johnson said in the story, adding it is designed to be used very specifically – and rarely," the story said.

So, know, you won't be getting whatever random text President Trump might Tweet out late at night-- this one will be reserved only for true national emergencies. It's not the first time the government will send out an unasked-for message to your phone, though. The story said there have been over 40,000 emergency alerts sent to cellphones since 2012. But those have been specific, local messages like Amber or Severe Weather Alerts.
