Starbucks is once again brewing up more than lattes; it’s also stirring concerns with another wave of store closings, and at least one coffee house here in Minnesota has made the list.

Starbucks Announces 250 Store Closures Across North America

Starbucks has been making the news more often recently. Back in January 2025, it announced a new code of conduct for its cafes, as it rolled out a new 'buy something or leave' policy. Axios reported that the change rolled back a previous policy that had been in place since 2018.

Then, last February, Starbucks quietly announced it was laying off around 1,100 of its corporate employees, though those cuts didn't affect any employees at any of its cafe locations here in the Land of 10,000 Lakes and across the country. And last fall, I wrote about another round of closures that hit Starbucks locations across the country.

And, by the way, there are a *lot* of Starbucks locations across the fruited plain of the United States. While Starbucks itself hadn't published the number of its cafes previously, estimates from 2025 said it had nearly 18,300 locations here in the U.S.

California has the most, with 3,080 Starbucks locations, followed by Texas, Florida, and Washington, which is home to the city of Seattle, where the coffee chain was founded. Here in the North Star State, we're ranked 22nd, with around 184 Starbucks locations, according to World Population Review. The data doesn't break down how many of those are stand-alone locations, and how many are located in other businesses, like Target stores.

And now, late last week, news broke that Starbucks will soon be closing approximately 250 underperforming stores across North America. That total amounts to roughly 1 percent of the coffee chain's footprint. CNBC reported that these closures are part of CEO Brian Niccol's "Back to Starbucks" turnaround strategy aimed at improving customer experience and restructuring operations.

Which Minnesota Starbucks Locations Are Closing?

And at least one Starbucks here in southeast Minnesota has made that list of stores set to close permanently. This story from Fast Company notes that the Starbucks located at 1610 Interlachen Trail in Mankato will apparently be shutting its doors for good as a result of the latest round of closures.

Meanwhile, BringMeTheNews reports that another Starbucks, located at 202 Shevlin Ave. SW in Bemidji is also part of this latest round of closures. So far, none of the 8 Rochester Starbucks locations appear to be affected.

Movies and TV shows have always found ways to partner with cereal companies as part of their promotion strategy.
