While the partial government shutdown caused TSA lines at airports around the country to slow way down, Minnesota's MSP Airport breezed through the busy spring break travel season. And here's how many travelers went through the biggest airport in the state this year-- and it's a lot!

MSP Airport Defies National TSA Shutdown Pressures

When March rolls around in the Land of 10,000 Lakes, Spring Break travelers are usually flood the turnstiles at the Minneapolis-St. Paul International Airport. In fact, several weeks in March typically see some of the largest crowds of the year at MSP. And, even though TSA agents were forced to work without pay-- for the second time in the last 6 months-- they still showed up and kept things running as usual here in the North Star State.

Of course, things going smoothly at MSP isn't a new phenomenon. You might recall a story I first wrote back in September, about how the 2025 Airport Satisfaction Survey from noted consumer research firm J.D. Power once again confirmed that the Minneapolis-St. Paul International Airport (MSP) near Bloomington is the Top Airport in the U.S. for Customer Satisfaction.

You also might recall a story I wrote last December about MSP unveiling the largest renovation of Terminal 1 in the airport's history. That project took over two years to complete and is something you'll definitely notice if you're flying out of Minnesota this spring or summer season.

Spring Break by the Numbers at Minneapolis–St. Paul International

And now, MSP confirms that, despite that partial government shutdown, a LOT of Minnesota spring breakers still successfully flew out of MSP for warmer destinations this year. Here are the numbers, courtesy of MSP:

  • MSP saw almost 1.3 million passengers screened at security checkpoints in the month of March.
  • 619,332 passengers were screened in the busiest two-week stretch from Monday, March 16, to Sunday, March 29.
  • The busiest days of spring break were Thursday, March 26, and Friday, March 27, which each saw more than 50,000 security screenings.

Why MSP Continues to Rank Among America’s Best Airports

This latest accomplishment isn't the first time Minnesota's MSP has been singled out as one of the best airports around. MSP was again named the best not just in the U.S., but on the entire North American continent according to the ASQ Awards and Recognition survey in 2024. And, MSP was also named the number one U.S. airport in the 2024 Travel + Leisure World’s Best Awards.

Then last year, MSP was again singled out as the best airport in the country when it comes to flight disruptions. Or specifically, when it comes to minimizing those flight disruptions. And last September, Delta Air Lines, the biggest carrier at MSP, was named the best on-time airline in the U.S. last summer as well.
