Melting snow along with below-zero temperatures overnight caused a massive refreeze that made for some slick conditions on roads in Minnesota this week, and made for two close calls for a State Patrol squad car.

If you've lived in the Land of 10,000 (Snow-and-Ice-Covered) Lakes for any length of time, you know how to drive in the cold, snow, and ice, right? Those winter conditions require you to slow down, increase your stopping distance, and be extra aware. Not everyone heeds those warnings, though, as the Twitter page Midwest Safety points out.

With slippery conditions reported on the roads and highways earlier this week across much of the Twin Cities metro area, first responders would have been glad if drivers were a little safer. Instead, responders were busy dealing with multiple spinouts and vehicles sliding into the ditch-- and into each other as well.

And a Minnesota Department of Transportation (MnDOT) traffic camera recently caught a close call with a State Patrol squad car. Actually, it caught *two* close calls with that same squad, as it sat with its emergency lights on along the shoulder of a slippery highway, responding to a car that had already spun out into the ditch.

After the first car JUST misses the squad, the trooper tells dispatch he needs to move, and ANOTHER vehicle spins out right behind him. Luckily, the trooper's car wasn't hit either time-- though you can hear on the radio transmission just how close the first car came to hitting the squad.
