New Sentencing Date Set in Derek Chauvin Case

Minneapolis, MN (KROC-AM News) - The sentencing of Derek Chauvin for the death of George Floyd has been postponed.

The online docket for the Hennepin County Court shows the sentencing hearing for the former Minneapolis police officer has been pushed back one week, from June 16th until the afternoon of June 25th. Chauvin was convicted last week of second-degree and third-degree murder and second-degree manslaughter charges for causing Floyd's death last May by pinning him to the ground with his knee pressed against Floyd's neck.

State sentencing guidelines call for a presumptive sentence of 12 1/2 years in prison but prosecutors have indicated they will request a longer prison sentence for Chauvin due to a variety of "aggravating factors." Judge Peter Cahill is expected to call a hearing between now and June 25th to hear arguments concerning those factors. The maximum sentence allowed under state law is 40 years in prison.
