Rochester, MN (KROC-AM News) -

The Rochester City Council has approved a phase one lease agreement that will allow the Mayo Clinic to operate an over 700 space park and ride facility at the former Kmart site in southeast Rochester.

The vote was 4-3 with Councilmembers Bilderback, Campion, and Johnson voting no. The lease could remain in effect for as long as ten years and requires the owner of the property to demolish the old Kmart building by 2022 and the facility could eventually be expanded to about 1300 parking spaces.

Mayor Kim Norton joined the minority in voicing opposition to the lease agreement. At the end of the discussion, the mayor highlighted her veto authority in stressing she was only willing to support a 5-year lease.
