Rochester Public Utilities Adopts 100% Renewable Goal
Rochester, MN (KROC-AM News) - Rochester Public Utilities has officially set a goal of meeting all of its energy needs through 100-percent renewable sources by 2030.
The RPU Board was presented Tuesday with a Resource Plan developed by Burns and McDonnell Engineering that included scenario options and costs of varying renewable energy levels and resources. That was followed by a unanimous vote to direct RPU staff to further pursue two 100-percent renewable scenarios. One would incorporate a 220-megawatt natural gas-powered generator to meet peak capacity and the other would involve battery storage to address peak demand.
“RPU prides itself on its commitment to work with the Rochester community and to be good stewards of resources. Today’s decision to go to 100% renewable energy by 2030 is a testament to the commitment by RPU Board, RPU staff, and Rochester citizens working together to find the best outcome for all,” said RPU General Manager Mark Kotschevar.
The 2030 date coincides with the end of RPU's contract for purchasing much of its electrical supply from the Southern Minnesota Municipal Power Agency. Rochester is the fourth city in Minnesota to formally adopt a 100-percent renewable energy goal. The other cities are Minneapolis, St. Paul, and St. Louis Park.
