Rochester, MN (KROC-AM News) - The Rochester School District is about to embark on a major building spree.

Voters in the Rochester School District voted Tuesday to approve a nearly $181 million dollar plan to build a new middle school and three new elementary schools to address the district’s growing enrollment. Two of the new elementary schools would be larger replacements for the existing Bishop and Longfellow Elementary Schools while the other would be built on vacant district-owned land in northwest Rochester. The school district also plans to add security upgrades to existing schools and making improvements to the auditoriums at the city’s public high schools.

The overall building plan was presented to voters in two questions. As of Midnight, with 60 of 65 precincts reporting,  the first was approved by a margin of nearly 70 to 30-percent, while the second passed by a margin of about 60 to 40-percent.

The second question involved plans to add a swimming pool at Century High School and upgrade the swimming pools at John Marshall and Mayo High Schools. Some of the funding would also be used to fill in the pools at the city’s existing middle schools and convert the spaces for other uses.
