Many students lie to their parents about not wanting to go to school because they are being bullied or dealing with mental health issues. I had the coolest parents known to man and they believed in mental health days. I was actually bullied in high school and there were days I didn't want to deal with the kids that were trying to tear me down! My parents would call me in sick every once in a while. Luckily I'm a strong independent woman and didn't let that stuff bother me completely.

KARE 11 shared this story the other day and I found it to be very interesting. Oregon is adopting a law that would allow students to take mental health days and they would count as excused absences just like sick days. The article states they are doing this because the suicide rate in Oregan and the national suicide rate continues to rise. They feel that this new law will help save lives and students will be more honest about why they want to stay home from school. This also gives parents and educators the opportunity to get the students the help they need.

So the question is, should Minnesota adopt this law? Or do you think we should continue with the policies we have in place? People in the mental health industry feel that by adopting this law, we could help our youth identify that they do need help and get them the help they need.
