Strong Start for 2018 Construction Activity in Rochester

Rochester, MN (KROC-AM News) - Despite the bitter cold, construction activity in Rochester remained strong in the first month of the new year. The Rochester Building Safety Department issued 141 building permits worth over $27.3 million in January. That’s a little ahead of last January’s valuation total of $23 million, which proved to be the start of a record-setting year for construction in the city.

The largest building permit approved last month was for the new Eastgate Apartment complex at the site of the former Wicked Moose bar. The permit for the 135 unit project is valued at $15.6 million. The next largest permit was for alterations at a building in the IBM complex worth almost $1.8 million.

A key measure of building activity is new home construction. The city approved 19 permits for new single-family homes in January. While that total is down considerably from the 33 issued in December, it is 4 above the total from January of last year.
