Looking for something to do in our sub-zero paradise? Why not go ice climbing! Recently we took our exchange student from Spain ice climbing up in Sandstone and he had a blast, and it was a way for him to go and experience Minnesota in the winter.

To be 100% honest, my wife and I went ice climbing back on one of our first 'real' dates together. We were headed to her cousin's wedding that weekend and we decided to go up a day earlier and try our hand ice climbing in Sandstone. Fast forward to this weekend when we took our exchange student from Spain ice climbing and he really enjoyed it.

Ice climbing, is like rock climbing, as you are in a harness and you use both your arms and legs to pull yourself up an ice sheet that is hanging vertically on a cliff. On top of using your hands and feet, you have ice picks in both hands, and then spikey shoes on your feet to grip into the ice as you climb.

While it was REALLY cold, it was also REALLY fun. We got to give Pau an experience he won't be able to have at home in Spain.

So over the next couple of weekends, if you are looking for something different to do, and you don't mind being outdoors and taking the 2-3 hour drive up to Sandstone, look up an ice climbing guide and give it a shot.

Here are some unique and or odd inventions that you'd never think were invented in Minnesota, in case you don't like being outside in the winter.
