Wild Changes – Bruce Boudreau Out As Minnesota’s Head Coach
After a disappointing loss at home to the New York Rangers Thursday night, Bruce Boudreau was fired as the Minnesota Wild's head coach, according to Michael Russo from the Atheltic.
This is another change to the status quo after the Minnesota Wild delt Jason Zucker earlier this month for a first-round pick, a prospect and Alex Galcheyuk. Now first-year General Manager Bill Gurien has decided to move on from Bruce Boudreau as head coach of the Minnesota Wild.
Boudreau has had a long track record of success in the regular season, but playoffs have been a struggle. In his 4+ years with the Wild, Boudreau's team had a record of 158-110-35 and just a 2-8 record in the playoffs, never getting out of the first round.
This is a move that comes out of nowhere, but just another inclination that Gurien is looking to put his stamp on the team. The Wild have struggled all season long and are 3 points out of a playoff spot, but have to jump three teams to get there with just 25 games to go.
This move may come at an interesting time for Minnesota Wild fans, but Gruien did say that if the team didn't continue to win that more moves would be made. After a disappointing loss Thursday night that saw the Wild have a 3-1 lead in the third period, give up the game-tying goal in the final minute of the game, then lose in a shootout, as enough evidence to show Gurien that a move needed to be made.
The Wild are a team filled with veterans like Ryan Suter, Zach Parise, Mikko Koivu, Devan Dubnyk and more, but now it is evident that the old way is out and Gruien is here to say things will go his way. I would think the younger players like Kevin Fiala, Ryan Donato, Jordan Greenway, Joel Erickson Ek begin to get bigger roles on this team.
This team is not close to competing for a Stanley Cup, and this move is just another mark to show that. Boudreau is a great coach, his track record is obvious, but Gruien must have thought a different voice was needed in the locker room.
Will this move spark the Wild? I have my doubts.
