’12 Years a Slave’ Wins Best Picture, Drama at the 2014 Golden Globes
This marks the only win out of the film’s seven nominations from the 2014 Golden Globes. Also contending for the honor of Best Picture, Drama were Alfonso Cuaron’s ‘Gravity,’ Paul Greengrass’ ‘Captain Phillips,’ Stephen Frears’ ‘Philomena’ and Ron Howard’s ‘Rush.’
Directed by Steve McQueen and based on the life of real-life figure Solomon Northup, ’12 Years a Slave’ stars Chiwetel Ejiofor in the lead role as a free African-American man living in upstate New York during the pre-Civil War era when he’s unceremoniously drugged, kidnapped and enslaved. Ejiofor was nominated for Best Actor in a Drama at the 2014 Golden Globes, while Michael Fassbender and Lupita Nyong’o were also nominated in the Best Supporting Actor categories.
