5 Reasonable Rules For Driving In Rochester

The first step to correcting any problem is admitting it, right?

Before I go further, I’d like to warn you that a person who learned to drive on the east coast is writing this. I know I’m an aggressive driver at times. I’m not proud of it, but hey – sometimes I do crazy things because I believe they are actually safer!

I’ve been driving in Rochester since July of 2016, and… let’s just say I’ve made some observations…

Anyone else agree that these should be some driving rules we follow here?

1. MERGE. MERGE. MERGE.

For the love of all that is holy, please do it in a timely and decisive fashion! Especially on 52!!! No one will be upset with the fact that you have to merge, I promise. The zipper merge is a nice way to do this. Let someone over if they need it.

2. Tailgating: Let’s not do that.

I don’t mean the fun “let’s hang before a Vikes game” tailgating. I mean the “please get off my behind!” kind of tailgating. It’s rude, and certainly not safe. Let’s just not do it. I promise, you’ll still get to wherever you’re supposed to be if you don’t.

3. Don’t do the “stop-start”.

I like to call it the “fakeout” too. It happens when someone appears to be making a turn, AND THEY DON’T COMPLETE IT… you know… they look like they are making the first move, start to move, and then CHANGE THEIR MIND and stay put? Maybe it’s because they feel like they are cutting you off? Yeah, let’s not do that either. Make a decision and be confident in it.

4. USE YOUR TURN SIGNAL!

I don’t always use my turn signal, but when I do, it’s because I don’t want to be hit. Again, for the love of all that is holy, please do it for those around you.

5. Distracted driving: Let’s not do that.

Duh.

There you have it, folks! I think these should be pretty easy to follow. Don’t you? Would you add a rule, or modify one of the ones above? What needs to change when it comes to driving in Rochester?
