St. Paul, MN (KROC-AM News) – Personnel and equipment from the Minnesota National Guard could soon be headed west to assist in firefighting efforts.

Governor Mark Dayton today issued an executive order directing the Minnesota National Guard to assist with the response and relief efforts taking place in Montana, Idaho, Washington, and Oregon.

“I am glad that Minnesota will be able to assist those affected by the terrible wildfires in the Western United States,” said Governor Dayton. “I thank Major General Nash for his leadership, and the brave Minnesota National Guard soldiers who will assist in response and relief efforts for the affected states. Minnesota stands ready to assist in any way we are able.”

Any request for the Minnesota National Guard’s assistance would come through the Emergency Management Assistance Compact.

The National Interagency Fire Center in Idaho today reported there were over 65 active fires being fought in the four states covered by Governor Dayton’s order, along with northern California. It’s been described as one of the worst fire seasons ever in the western U.S.
