The Eagles Cancer Telethon is just a week and a half away, on Jan. 17 & 18. If you've cut out half of your favorite foods and stuck to certain workouts hoping that you'll avoid cancer later in life you may be wasting your time.

A new study suggests that cancer is actually mostly random and caused by bad luck instead of our lifestyle choices.

For 65% of cancer patients, their cancer was caused by genetic mistakes they couldn't control and not lifestyle issues.

So, while lifestyle choices like smoking can increase your chances for lung cancer, for the most part many cancers are just the bad luck of genetic mutations.

Here are the cancers that are just a result of some bad luck:

Brain tumor
Head and neck
Thyroid
Esophageal
Lung
Bone
Liver
Pancreatic
Skin cancer (anywhere on the body)
Ovarian
Testicular

Here are cancers caused by lifestyle:

Skin cancer (basal cell carcinoma)
Throat
Thyroid
Lung (in smokers)
Liver
Colon
