Rochester, MN (KROC AM News) - The cold weather the Rochester area has experienced during most of February has sent the local frost depth to at least four feet.

The latest information from the Minnesota Dept. of Transportation shows the frost level had reached 48 inches around Feb. 10. On January 10th the level was just shy of three feet.

The average daily temperature in the Rochester area so far this month is 13.5 degrees. That’s 4.3 degrees below average.

The lack of snow is also contributing to the frost depth.

The snowfall total for February at the Rochester airport as of Wednesday was 4.1 inches. That’s nearly 5 inches below average. The seasonal total of 26.5 inches is about a foot below average. A few inches of snow could fall through Thursday evening. As of Wednesday evening, the snow depth at the airport was 3 inches.

This week’s cold weather will linger through Friday before warmer temperatures arrive for the weekend - and perhaps longer.
