Rochester, MN (KROC AM News) -

For the first time since the state ordered schools closed in March because of the COVID-19 pandemic, students will be back in their classrooms at Longfellow.

The elementary school operates under a unique 45/15 schedule that differs from other Rochester schools.

Principal Amy Adams says Longfellow will follow guidelines to begin the new year with a hybrid learning model. She says Longfellow is the first school to adopt the model.

Adams says half the 320 students will attend classes two days a week and the other half will be at the school the other two days. While not at the school, students will take part in distance learning. Fridays will be set aside for more distance learning. Adams says some parents have decided not to send their children to school and will continue distance learning.

Adams says many parents and students visited the school last week. She says she heard various concerns from parents but most were supportive of the hybrid learning model.

Adams says because it’s a new model, “ we will be learning as we go. “ And she adds, “It’s going to take all of us working together to make it successful.“

The state will release its model for the new year on Thursday and Adams says Longfellow will make whatever changes are necessary to be in compliance. The hybrid model is one the state is considering.
