Pine Island, MN (KROC AM News) - Smoke alarms helped a Pine Island family escape their burning house early Saturday.

The Pine Island Fire Dept. says a 911 call was received around 1:30 am from a residence in the 400 block of 4th St SW.

Crews arrived to find “heavy fire and smoke coming from the first and second-story windows.”

Asst. Fire Chief David Friese says the homeowners “woke to hear smoke alarms sounding in the home. Members of the family found smoke and flames inside the home but were able to escape without injury.”

Friese says the cause of the fire is under investigation. He says crews were still at the scene as of 5:45 am Saturday.

The family is looking for a new place to stay. Friese says “The home and its contents are considered a total loss.” 

This was the second residential fire in Pine Island this week. A Rochester man set fire to a woman’s townhome during what officers said was a domestic dispute.
