I can't say this news surprises me. The Minnesota State High School league (MSHSL), in response to a request from a group of soccer coaches, said they not support a plan for a state soccer tournament. We have already seen the high school league do an about face on the football and volleyball seasons by shifting them back to the fall season. But a move to get behind a state tournament for one fall sport, would really seem to open up a can of worms with other sports desiring the same move for them.

The Star Tribune reports that a proposal was sent to the MSHSL with the backing of "a large group of coaches" for a six-day state soccer tournament that would crown Class A and Class AA champs in boys and girls categories.

MSHSL executive director reportedly emailed a response, "At this time, our Board has made the decision to maintain a focus on a postseason that is based locally, concludes at the section level, and is in alignment with the recommendation of the Minnesota Department of Health to reduce the gathering of individuals, especially from a variety of communities."

The soccer playoffs begin in Owatonna Thursday, October 15 with a boys/girls doubleheader of matches against Rochester John Marshall. Section 1AA will continue with semifinals on Tuesday, October 20 and the finals on Thursday, October 22 at the higher seeds each night.

The high school league is allowing for section playoffs in all fall sports. Winter sports will get underway in December. The MSHSL has not yet indicated whether there will be sections and state tournament for winter activities.
