Superintendent Discusses AI’s Impact on Learning
While acknowledging the potential benefits, the superintendent also highlighted the possible pitfalls of relying on the technology to perform tasks that can lay the foundation for young people to develop critical thinking skills. Pekel pointed to challenges created by technology—particularly the impact on cognitive development associated with “screen time”—and the need for students to understand the long-range benefits of actually doing the work instead of using AI to skip important steps in the learning process.

The updated strategic plan for Rochester Public Schools is currently under development, and Pekel expects it will be presented to the School Board in the spring of next year
.Budget Outlook Improves With Higher Enrollment
The superintendent also addressed the ongoing financial challenges faced by the Rochester School District, while noting the situation has improved in recent weeks. Better-than-expected student enrollment this year helped reduce the projected budget deficit from around $13.5 million to approximately $8.4 million. Pekel said savings associated with salaries budgeted for positions that have not been filled have also lowered the amount of cuts that will need to be made in the short term.
