5 Stunning MN Private Islands You Can Buy Right Now
Sure, Minnesota is known for our 10,000 Lakes, but there are also a lot of islands scattered about our fair state, and these five are for sale right now.
When it comes to lakes, it's tough to beat us here in Minnesota, right? And while our famous state slogan proudly proclaims that there are 10,000 lakes in this land, the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources (DNR) points out that there are actually 11,842 lakes here in the North Star State.
The Secret Geography of the North Star State: More Than Just Water
Located within those 11,842 lakes are some pretty cool islands, as well. We don't know exactly *how* many there are in Minnesota, though, because the DNR says many of those islands are unnamed and uncounted in formal inventories.

However, some credible listings and geography resources give different estimates of the number of named or recognized islands in the North Star State:
- Anyplace America says there are 584 islands in Minnesota across lakes and rivers (not just Lake of the Woods) by county.
- The US Islands Awards Program database shows at least 141 named islands in Minnesota waters as of late 2025.
- And Wikipedia notes that Lake Vermilion alone has 365 islands within its waters!
