How Are ER Wait Times in Minnesota Compared to Other States?

Being that Rochester is well known for being home to the best hospital in the country, how do wait times in the emergency room here compare to other states?

That was the question the number-crunchers over at IT service automation company SysAid wanted to answer. They studied the latest data released from 2020 to 2021 from the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services to see how states stack up when it comes to hospital waiting times.

And, here in Minnesota, we do pretty well. (Which we SHOULD do, seeing as the world-renowned Mayo Clinic is right here in our backyard, right?) Average hospital wait times here in the North Star State came in at 2 hours and 9 minutes, which is definitely above average, and put us 12th out of 50 states in the survey. (That's not bad, mind you, but I was a little surprised we weren't ranked a little higher.)

Over in my home state of Wisconsin, hospital wait times averaged 2 hours and 16 minutes, good for 17th place on the list. Our neighboring state of North Dakota was ranked first, with the shortest average hospital wait time of just 1 hour and 44 minutes. Meanwhile, Maryland was last and had the longest average wait time of 3 hours and 48 minutes.

South Dakota - 1 hour and 53 minutes
Nebraska - 1 hour and 54 minutes
Oklahoma - 1 hour and 55 minutes
Hawaii - 1 hour and 57 minutes
Kansas - (tie) 1 hour and 57 minutes
Iowa - 2 hours and 3 minutes
Mississippi - 2 hours and 4 minutes
Arkansas - 2 hours and 7 minutes
Montana - (tie) 2 hours and 7 minutes
