St Paul (KROC AM News) - More than 5,000 new positive COVID-19 cases were confirmed in Minnesota Thursday - smashing the previous daily record set just the day before.

The new record of 5454 eclipsed Wednesday's daily total of 3956. The state’s overall total of positive cases has grown to more than 170,000 since the first case was confirmed way back on March 5th. More than 3-million tests have now been performed.
The department's latest report also shows a new daily record of 36 deaths.

Olmsted County confirmed a new daily record of 114 positive cases Thursday, one day after the previous record of 108 was set. The county’s first 100 plus day was last Saturday when it recorded 107 cases.

The state Health Department’s latest report also shows hospitals around the state continue dealing with an increase in infected patients.

More than 1,000 Covid patients were hospitalized as of Thursday, the highest number so far. The number in ICU units was 224.
