Rochester, MN (KROC-AM News) - The Veterans of Foreign Wars Post that has made downtown Rochester its home for nearly 100 years is just weeks away from moving out.

A news release from VFW Post 1215 indicates the long-planned move to its new location in northwest Rochester will take place in May. The VFW hopes to be ready to stage a “soft opening” at the former Golden Corral Restaurant site in mid-May and hold a grand opening celebration on June 14th to coincide with Flag Day and the birthday of the United States Army.

VFW Post 1215 earlier sold its downtown Rochester site to the University of Minnesota for use as a future campus for UMR. The almost $2.7 million purchase price allowed the veterans organization to purchase the Golden Corral location and spend about a million dollars renovating and remodeling the building into a bar and event hall. It will be the new home and meeting place for the VFW Post’s over 400 members, along with the 60 member VFW Auxiliary and a number of other smaller veterans-related organizations.

The current building, which has been used VFW Post 1215 for over 50 years, will be demolished in the near future and converted into green space until the U of M is ready to proceed with the construction of the new campus. The VFW property also includes the old Benny’s R-Tic Root Beer Stand building, and the plans currently also call for its demolition.
