Rochester, MN (KROC-AM News) - The weather was a bit warmer Saturday than it has been for the 19 previous Polar Plunge events in Rochester, but the water was just as cold as past plunges as hundreds of people took up the challenge to raise money for the Minnesota Special Olympics.

Organizer and Olmsted County Sheriff Kevin Torgerson says 481 people took the plunge this year at Foster Arend Park and raised about $167,000 to help fund Special Olympics events activities throughout the year. The numbers were down from recent years due to limitations implemented to meet COVID-19 safety mandates. The event was also postponed a few weeks this year because of the pandemic.

It was the 20th Rochester Polar Plunge. Torgerson says, over the years, the fun and fundraising events have brought in over $3 million.
