One longtime brewery here in Minnesota says it will soon be putting the pint glasses on the shelf for the final time and closing permanently.

I've been a big fan of Minnesota's incredible craft beer industry and all the great local breweries across our state for years now. One of the favorite things my wife and I like to do is to hit up a local craft brewery and try a couple of the handcrafted beers each brewery creates-- and there are a lot of them to try.

Minnesota is, of course, the Land of 10,000 Lakes, but could also be called we're also the Land of 170 Craft Breweries. Because that's roughly how many incredible local, independent breweries are operating right now here in Minnesota, according to the  Minnesota Craft Brewers Guild.

But, sadly, there will soon be one less brewery here in the Bold North, as a popular brewery has just announced that it will be closing permanently in the new year, if not sooner.

That was the sad news from Mankato Brewery, which made the announcement on their Facebook page that 'their journey as a brewery is coming to an end.' The popular brewery has been located at 1119 Center Street North in Mankato for the past twelve years, and when it opened in 2012, was 'Mankato's first production brewery since 1967,' their website notes.

You might be familiar with some of Mankato Brewing's beers, including Mad Butcher IPA, which is their leading core brand, its website noted. Other core brands include Rhuby Rhubarb Sour, Kato Lager, and Organ Grinder Amber Ale, the brewery's site said.

But, as the saying goes, all good things must come to an end. Owner Tim Tupy, who BringMeTheNews reported put the brewery up for sale earlier this summer, is set to retire and will close the brewery permanently in January 2025, Mankato Brewery's Facebook page said:

Our taproom will remain open until the end of January 2025, or until we’ve shared our last pint and sold our final pieces of merchandise. Between now and then, we invite you to visit, relive favorite moments, and join us in honoring the passion and love that has gone into every drop of beer we’ve brewed.

According to the Mankato Brewery, the business is still for sale (with a list price of $3,950,000) and produced 3,761 barrels of beer in 2023, which made it the 19th largest brewery in Minnesota. Speaking of Minnesota breweries, keep scrolling to check out the 25 highest-rated breweries that call the North Star State home!

25 Highest-Rated Breweries in Minnesota

To help you discover some of the best local brews, Stacker put together a list of Minnesota's top-rated breweries based on Tripadvisor data. Tripadvisor's rankings are a mix of several factors, including overall rating, user reviews, and page traffic. This means that even a brewery with a perfect 5 out of 5 rating might be outranked by one with a 4 out of 5 if it has more reviews or higher visibility.
